Remains found in a remote area of Colorado’s Gunnison National Park have been confirmed to belong to a man who was reported missing in February, the National Park Service said Wednesday.

Jordan Marsters, 31, was initially reported missing to the Denver Police Department by his family on Feb. 15. On Feb. 24, the National Park Service and the Montrose County Sheriffs Office reported that Marsters was last known to be at the Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park on the morning of Feb. 13 at approximately 7:20 am.

Marsters was driving a white Kia Fuente rental car, which was later discovered abandoned at the Black Canyon, and that was where search efforts began.

Human remains were found “in a remote and highly technical area within the wilderness area at Black Canyon,” the National Park Service said Wednesday. They were recently confirmed to belong to Marsters.

An operation to recover the remains on April 13 involved several agencies with special technical rescue and recovery capabilities. Assisting agencies included the Capitol Reef National Park Recovery Team; Canyonlands National Park Recovery Team; Colorado National Monument Recovery Team; Curecanti National Recreation Area Overhead and Recovery Team; Montrose County Road and Bridge; Friends of Black Canyon Search and Rescue Volunteers Contingency Team; and Mountain Blade Runner Helicopters.

“Without their help this search would not have been successful,” park officials said. “These agencies and the family have worked tirelessly to bring a resolution to this search and recovery of the remains.”
