Elderly Man Who Fatally Shot Another Man While Hunting Turkeys Charged With Murder

An elderly California man is facing charges for allegedly fatally shooting another man while they were both out separately hunting turkeys, authorities said.

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at around 9 a.m. Sunday to a report of a hunting incident the area of Gifford Road southeast of Knights Landing in the Fremont Weir Wildlife Area. Deputies arrived to find a 65-year-old man with a single gunshot wound.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, identified as 80-year-old John Lee of Sacramento, was taken into custody without incident.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect and victim were out separately hunting turkeys in the area. Lee was booked into the Sutter County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and negligent discharge of a firearm.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
