U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently seized 761 pounds of liquid methamphetamine concealed within a semi-truck’s diesel fuel tanks in California.

At around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, Border Patrol agents from the San Diego Sector pulled over a tractor-trailer traveling northbound on Interstate 215 in Murrieta. Agents requested a K-9 unit to respond to the scene, and the K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics.

After agents discovered “anomalies” in the fuel tanks and the fluid inside, the truck and driver were transported to a Border Patrol station for further investigation.

There, agents discovered an “aftermarket compartment” within both diesel tanks. The compartments contained fluid that tested positive for the characteristics of methamphetamine. The extracted liquid filled 22 5-gallon buckets, for a total of 761 pounds of liquid methamphetamine worth an estimated $684,900.

The agency said it was San Diego Sector’s largest meth seizure in the last two years.

The driver and the narcotics were turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for prosecution, and the truck was seized by CBP.

“Foreign terrorist organizations will use every trick in the book to get their drugs into the country,” Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the San Diego Sector, said in a statement. “The agents of San Diego Sector are the best in the business and will continue to target, interdict, and dismantle these organizations.”
