1 Dead After Vehicle Drives Off Overpass And Hits Light Rail Train Outside Denver

One person is dead after a car drove off an overpass and became pinned between a light rail train and a wall outside of Denver, Colo., early Tuesday, authorities said.

South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a report of a crash between a vehicle and a light rail train near 10200 Station Way in Lone Tree, a suburb southeast of Denver, shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday. The arrived to find the vehicle pinned between the train and a wall near the State Highway 470 and Interstate 25 interchange.

According to the fire department, the vehicle reportedly drove off the overpass onto the train track. Video and photos shared by the fire department show a crushed vehicle wedged in just a few feet of space between the train car and a wall below the overpass.

One operator and one passenger on board the train were uninjured. An occupant of the vehicle was confirmed dead.

The on-ramp from northbound I-25 from eastbound 470 was closed while crews worked to remove the vehicle from where it was pinned. Roads reopened shortly after 6 a.m.

The fire department said the crash is being investigated by the Lone Tree Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol.
